Alan Barrell has spent 30 years in senior positions in technology-based industries. He is Entrepreneur in Residence at Cambridge University, and a Visiting Professor at Xiamen University and the Shanghai College of Science and Technology, International Research Fellow at Laurea University of Applied Sciences Helsinki, Entrepreneur in Residence at McMaster University in Canada and Guest Professor at Tohoku Fukushi University Sendai. He is advisor to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Global Student Challenge project.
Professor Barrell currently chairs the East of England NHS Innovations Council and Health Enterprise East Limited. Alan is a member of the investor groups Cambridge Angels and Sophia Business Angels, and on the Boards of five early stage life science companies. He works closely with a number of Science Parks and Innovation Centres in Cambridge, elsewhere in the UK and overseas. He received The Queen’s Award in 2006 for Enterprise Promotion and was conferred the Honour of Knight First Class, Order of the White Rose of Finland by the President of Finland in February 2011.
